Former East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) speaker Margaret Nantongo Zziwa has urged educationists to emulate Innocent Onika Atubo by penning more books to improve the country's reading culture.
The former speaker Zziwa said educationists need to set aside part of their budget to encourage young people to start writing their stories early enough. Zziwa said Onika Atubo was an example of the kind of product the country can have if youth and all Ugandans are inspired from when they become literate to share their thought with the world.
Zziwa was speaking at the launch of Onika Atubo's book The Master's Dog.
She commended Atubo for going beyond speaking about his passion by penning down a book in short, easy to read chapters and arrangement that many Ugandans are likely to find appealing. She thanked Atubo for keeping in mind the notoriously short attention spans of his audience in the format he adopted.
Onika Atubo said he was inspired to write the book because he loves reading but found it difficult to find books written for the Ugandan audience by a Ugandan author. A believer in the power of the world to change the world, Atubo said books are a chance to influence society positively and for a long time unlike oral speeches that are forgotten as soon as the speaker is no longer visible.
