Museveni heads to ‘anti-age limit removal’ Kabarole with mega rally

President Yoweri Museveni will address a rally at Karambi Play ground in Karambi Sub County, Kabarole District, following the close of age limit consultations.

Museveni is on the invitation of Burahya County member of parliament, Margaret Muhanga who doubles as the NRM caucus spokesperson and an ardent advocate for the removal of age limit.

However, Ms Muhanga dismissed claims that president Museveni will be in Kabarole for the controversial Constitutional (Amendment) (No.2) Bill, 2017 that has divided Ugandans.

“The president can not attend these togikwatako things, besides the consultations ended. This is rally meant to consolidate our achievements as NRM and task ourselves on our next targets,” Muhanga said.

Museveni’s visit comes at a time when a section of leaders in the district have openly spoken against amending the age limit. Last month, Tooro Elders under their umbrella Isaazi ly'Abaantu Bakuru Ba Tooro asked government to drop the proposal. The elders argue that there are more pressing issues in the country to address and not those being fronted by selfish individuals.

The elders join Alex Ruhunda the Fort Portal Municipality Member of Parliament and Kabarole district Woman MP, Slyvia Rwabwogo, who are also against the removal of the Presidential age limits. Bishops Robert Muhiirwa Akiiki of Fort Portal Catholic Diocese and Reuben Kisembo Amooti of the Anglican diocese of Rwenzori also want the President and MPs to protect the constitution, which they swore to defend.

John Kusemererwa, the Kabarole District National Resistance Movement-NRM party Chairperson says that the President's presence will also be a big boost to the party in Kabarole, which is divided over the bill. He explains that rally is not only open to residents of Burahya constituency but people of Fort-Portal Municipality as well.
