The outreach, led by Chief Magistrate John Paul Osauro, was part of the Judiciary’s efforts to improve access to justice, strengthen engagement with court users and promote faster resolution of criminal matters.
During the visit, the judicial team inspected prison conditions and held discussions with inmates and prison officials on challenges affecting the administration of justice.
The officers sensitised inmates on Judiciary initiatives, including plea bargaining, community service and mediation, explaining that the programmes help resolve cases faster, reduce case backlog and ease congestion in prisons while ensuring fair administration of justice.
Inmates raised concerns about bail requirements, prolonged remand, court procedures, appeals and payment of fines.
The judicial officers addressed the concerns, explained the relevant legal processes and encouraged inmates to exercise their legal rights.
The team also engaged prison officials on institutional challenges affecting the criminal justice system, including shortage of State Attorneys, inadequate prison accommodation and limited transport for inmates attending court.
They explored possible local solutions and emphasised the need for continued collaboration among justice sector institutions to improve service delivery.
Chief Magistrate Osauro urged inmates eligible for plea bargaining and community service to utilise the available legal options, reminding them of their constitutional right to apply for bail.
He reaffirmed the Judiciary’s commitment to expediting criminal cases to minimise prolonged pre-trial detention and unnecessary delays.
Osauro said regular prison outreach programmes help bridge the gap between courts and inmates, improve public understanding of court processes and strengthen confidence in the justice system.
The outreach was attended by Magistrate Simon Peter Odongoi of Baitambogwe Magistrate’s Court, Magistrate Methodius Mujambere Niyongira of Mayuge Chief Magistrate’s Court, State Attorney Rogers Waiswa, Community Service Officer Ann Nabwire and other justice sector officials.
The team resolved to continue similar outreach visits to all prison facilities under the jurisdiction of Mayuge Chief Magistrate’s Court to promote access to justice, increase awareness of legal remedies and strengthen collaboration with the Uganda Prisons Service.
