The Manager of the Office of the National Chairman (ONC), Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo Uzeiye, has commended the progress made by Babra Kyomugisha, a single mother she recently supported with business capital, housing and household essentials after learning about her family's plight.
Namyalo returned to Katwe on Wednesday to assess Kyomugisha's welfare and the progress of the small business established with the startup capital she received from the ONC.
The two first met during the ongoing verification of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) village committee voters' registers ahead of the Local Council I (LC I) elections.
Their meeting came after a viral social media video highlighted the difficult conditions in which Kyomugisha and her children had been living.
During their initial encounter, Kyomugisha broke down in tears as she recounted the hardships her family faced, including a lack of a stable source of income, frequent hunger and the constant struggle to educate her children.
She said her children's school fees amounted to Shs150,000 but she could sometimes only raise Shs3,000, leaving them at risk of dropping out of school.
Moved by her story, Namyalo immediately provided startup capital to help Kyomugisha establish a small business and become financially independent.
After visiting the family's makeshift shelter, Namyalo also relocated Kyomugisha and her children to a self-contained house after paying a full year's rent. The family also received a mattress, blankets, clothing, food supplies and other essential household items.
During her follow-up visit, Namyalo expressed satisfaction with the progress Kyomugisha had made and encouraged her to remain committed to growing her business.
"Our mission is not only to respond to people's immediate needs but to empower them to stand on their own. Seeing Kyomugisha making progress gives us hope that with the right support, many struggling families can rebuild their lives with dignity," Namyalo said.
She urged Kyomugisha to remain disciplined, invest wisely in her business and prioritise the education and welfare of her children.
An emotional Kyomugisha thanked Namyalo for restoring hope to her family.
"I never imagined that anyone would come to my rescue in this way. I had lost hope in life and did not expect to receive such overwhelming support. Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo wiped away my tears, restored my dignity, gave me and my children a new beginning, and even provided me with capital to start a business. I will always be grateful to her. May God richly bless her," she said.
The Office of the National Chairman said the intervention reflects its continued efforts to support vulnerable Ugandans through humanitarian assistance, economic empowerment and sustainable livelihood initiatives.
