Jinja: Man commits suicide in police cells

Police in Jinja are investigating circumstances under which a suspect committed suicide in their cells.

Musa Gubindi a boda boda rider in Jinja town was arrested and detained at Magwa Police Post over a debt of Shs 300,000.

On Friday morning his body was found hanging in police cells.

The incident occurred last night at Magwa Police Post, at the outskirts of Jinja town

By morning police officers and the army had deployed heavily to restrain members of the public from getting close to the police cells.

A small crowd gathered around the police station while some people stood at a distance.

It is alleged that Gubindi got an accident and sustained serious injuries and due to his frail condition he failed to service a loan he secured from one of the financial institutions which ordered for his arrest yesterday.

Police from CPS Jinja took the body to Jinja hospital mortuary as investigations continue.

Police was non committal to comment about the matter.
