President Museveni has welcomed the designation of the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) as the East African Community (EAC) Regional Centre of Excellence in Virology.
The designation strengthens Uganda's role in disease surveillance, research and response to infectious disease outbreaks across the region.
The announcement was made as UVRI celebrated its 90th anniversary at its headquarters in Entebbe.
The new status places the institute at the centre of regional efforts to detect, study and respond to viral diseases, including Ebola, Marburg and other emerging infectious threats.
In a message delivered by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, President Museveni commended UVRI for its contribution to public health and scientific research.
"UVRI has made an outstanding contribution to Uganda's health sector and the global scientific community," Museveni said, describing the institute's 90-year history as one marked by scientific discoveries and life-saving research.
The President also challenged Ugandan scientists to deepen research and innovation, assuring them of continued government support for science and technology to address the country's health challenges.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, UVRI officially opened a museum showcasing its scientific history and contributions to medical research over the past nine decades.
Speaking at the event on behalf of the President, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja reaffirmed government's commitment to supporting scientific research and innovation.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health Dr Diana Atwine urged researchers to continue developing practical solutions to emerging public health threats.
"Research must continue to provide practical solutions to emerging public health challenges," Atwine said.
The event was attended by several senior government officials, including Speaker of Parliament Anita Among and other dignitaries.
The EAC designation is expected to strengthen regional collaboration in virology research, disease surveillance, laboratory capacity and outbreak preparedness, while enhancing Uganda's role in safeguarding regional health security.
