In every community, there is one investment that outlives generations: a library.
For Bunamwaya C.O.U Primary School, that vision began to take shape in 2023 when construction commenced on a library that was never intended to be just another building. It was conceived as a centre of learning, discovery and opportunity for more than 700 pupils, their teachers and the wider Bunamwaya community.
The project symbolised a commitment to ensuring that every child, regardless of background, has access to knowledge, imagination and the tools needed to succeed in school and beyond.
Yet three years later, the dream remains unfinished.
Construction stalled at the foundation stage following internal club challenges, leaving behind a structure that represents both hope and unfinished business. While the building has stood still, the need it was designed to address has only become more urgent.
Today, more than 700 learners continue to study with limited access to textbooks, often reading under trees or in overcrowded classrooms. Without a dedicated library, opportunities for independent learning, research and reading for pleasure remain severely constrained.
A completed library would transform this reality.
For pupils, it would provide access to storybooks that nurture creativity, revision materials that improve academic performance and a quiet environment where they can study after lessons. Literacy remains one of the strongest predictors of educational success, and a well-equipped library can become the foundation upon which future doctors, engineers, teachers and entrepreneurs begin their journeys.
Teachers would also benefit significantly. Beyond serving learners, the facility would function as a professional resource centre where educators can access reference materials, prepare lessons and improve classroom instruction. Better-equipped teachers ultimately translate into better learning outcomes for every child.
The vision extends beyond the school gates.
Plans for the Bunamwaya C.O.U Primary School Library include opening its doors to the surrounding community during evenings and school holidays. Adults seeking literacy skills, young people looking to improve their digital competencies and community members pursuing vocational knowledge would all have access to learning resources under one roof.
In this way, the library would become not simply a school facility but a community learning hub capable of transforming lives across generations.
Although construction halted at the foundation stage, project leaders insist the vision remains alive.
Supporters are now appealing to Rotarians, Rotaractors, alumni, corporate organisations, development partners and members of the public to help complete the project through financial contributions, donations of building materials and books, or professional expertise.
Every contribution has a tangible impact. A donation of UGX 20,000 purchases bricks, UGX 100,000 buys roofing materials, while larger contributions help complete walls, roofing, windows, shelving and interior finishes. Contributions of furniture, computers, solar equipment, books and volunteer labour from skilled professionals such as masons, carpenters, electricians, painters, librarians and ICT specialists are equally valuable.
The appeal is about more than completing a building.
It is about investing in the future of hundreds of children whose potential depends on access to knowledge. It is about ensuring that the next generation grows up believing that education is supported not only by classrooms, but by communities willing to invest in their future.
Years from now, the success stories that emerge from Bunamwaya may well begin with a simple sentence: "I discovered my passion in that library."
For now, however, the foundation remains unfinished.
