President Museveni has described the late former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda, Perezi Seth Tenywa Bukhumune, as one of the patriotic Ugandans who supported economic reforms that helped rebuild the country’s economy after the 1986 change of government.

In a condolence message delivered on his behalf by Minister for the Presidency Milly Babirye Babalanda during Bukhumune’s burial in Ibulanku, Bugweri District, on Saturday, Museveni said he was saddened by the death of the veteran economist and public servant.

The President conveyed his condolences to Bukhumune’s family, friends and the people of Uganda, praising his contribution to the country’s socio-economic transformation.

Museveni said Bukhumune was part of the Bank of Uganda team that supported the implementation of economic reforms introduced by the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government after coming to power in 1986.

According to the President, the reforms helped stabilise the economy through restoring price stability, rebuilding production capacity, rehabilitating economic and social infrastructure, and promoting fiscal discipline.

"On behalf of the government and myself, I convey my heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family, friends and all Ugandans. I salute the late Perezi Tenywa Bukhumune for his patriotic contribution to Uganda's socio-economic transformation. May his soul rest in eternal peace," Museveni’s message read.

The President also contributed Shs10 million towards funeral arrangements.

Bukhumune died on Thursday, July 2, at the age of 90.

He served as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda from 1986 to 1990, a period when the country was implementing major economic recovery programmes following years of instability.

He later served in the Constituent Assembly between 1993 and 1996, where he participated in the process that produced Uganda’s 1995 Constitution.

Bukhumune also served as chairperson of the Uganda Coffee Development Authority and held leadership responsibilities within Bugweri Chiefdom, where he was the First Deputy Katukiiro (Prime Minister).

At the time of his death, he was serving as the pioneer chairperson of the Bugweri Chiefdom Elders’ Council.
