As Uganda prepares for the upcoming Local Council I (LC I) elections, residents have been urged to take part in the voter registration exercise scheduled to run from June 6 to June 10, to ensure they are eligible to participate in the election of village leaders.

The appeal follows the Electoral Commission’s announcement of a national voter registration programme aimed at updating the voters’ register ahead of village-level elections across the country.

Local leaders in Mityana Municipality say the exercise is a key step in strengthening grassroots democracy, noting that village leaders play an important role in community development, conflict resolution, and the implementation of government programmes.

Sunday Ambrose Kafunda, the LC I Chairperson of Buye-Kikumbi Village in Busimbi Division, who is also seeking re-election, urged eligible residents to register within the stipulated period and take an active part in the electoral process.

“Every eligible resident should ensure they register, because the right to vote begins with being on the voters’ register. These elections determine leaders who work closely with communities on a daily basis,” Kafunda said.

He also called on voters to assess candidates based on their track record of service rather than political affiliation.

“Although I belong to the NRM, I have always served all residents without discrimination. Leadership at the village level should focus on addressing people’s needs and promoting development, regardless of political differences,” he added.

Among those seeking elective positions is Haawa Nabasumba, who is contesting for the position of Women Representative in Buye-Kikumbi Village. She emphasized the importance of voter registration, noting that only those whose names appear on the voters’ register will be allowed to vote.

“I encourage all women, youth, and other eligible residents to register. If you are not on the register, you will miss the opportunity to choose leaders who represent your interests,” Nabasumba said.

She said her decision to contest is driven by her long-standing commitment to supporting women and strengthening families within the community.

“For many years, I have worked closely with women in this village. I want to continue advocating for their welfare, empowering families, and ensuring women’s voices are heard in local leadership,” she said.

Meanwhile, Matovu Gyerengesa, the Parish Development Model (PDM) Chairperson for Kireku Parish in Busimbi Division, urged residents to elect competent and committed leaders capable of advancing government programmes and improving service delivery.

“Communities should elect leaders based on their ability to serve rather than political sentiment. Effective village leadership is essential for the successful implementation of government programmes and local development initiatives,” Gyerengesa said.

He noted that some government programmes have previously underperformed due to weak leadership at the grassroots level, adding that the forthcoming elections present an opportunity for communities to choose more effective representatives.

The voter registration exercise is expected to pave the way for smooth LC I elections, with local leaders expressing optimism that increased public participation will strengthen accountability, improve governance, and enhance development at the village level.
