KAMPALA — The National Unity Platform (NUP) has unveiled its roadmap for the forthcoming Local Council (LC) and Women's Council elections, urging eligible Ugandans to participate in the Electoral Commission's voter register update exercise to ensure they are eligible to vote.

Speaking during the launch of the party's electoral roadmap, NUP Electoral Management Committee member Harriet Chemutai said the party was fully prepared for the electoral process despite what she described as delays in the release of the election programme.

"They have been playing with us, thinking we would not be prepared, but we are telling you that we are always prepared," Chemutai said.

"We have prepared, and that is why we are here to present the roadmap."

Chemutai said the Electoral Commission had issued guidelines for the upcoming elections, including a voter register verification and update exercise scheduled to commence on July 6.

She urged all eligible Ugandans, particularly those who have relocated or have not previously registered, to take advantage of the exercise.

"I want to urge Ugandans that you have to register before you participate in this election," she said.

"Those who need fresh registration should do so. Do not assume that because you are registered elsewhere, you will automatically be able to vote where you currently reside."

She said the voter register update exercise is essential to ensuring that eligible citizens are included on the electoral roll and can participate in electing their Local Council and Women's Council leaders.

The launch of the roadmap signals the start of NUP's preparations for the grassroots elections, with the party expected to begin mobilising supporters and identifying candidates across the country ahead of the Electoral Commission's official election programme.

The Electoral Commission recently announced the roadmap for the Local Council and Women's Council elections, which includes voter register verification and update activities intended to produce an accurate and credible voters' register before polling.
