Rare whiskies, remarkable stories and a touch of magic at Dim The Lights tasting night

The lights were low, conversations measured and the whisky exceptionally rare as premium Naalya hangout Dim The Lights hosted an exclusive showcase of Diageo’s 2025 Special Releases collection on Wednesday evening.

‎The intimate gathering brought together whisky enthusiasts, collectors and tastemakers for a guided exploration of five limited-edition expressions from some of Scotland’s most celebrated distilleries, The Singleton Glen Ord 17 Year Old, Clynelish Waxen Sun, Lagavulin 12 Year Old, Oban 12 Year Old and Talisker 14 Year Old.

‎The session was led by UBL Reserve Brand Ambassadors Melanie Kaita and Steven Baguma, who took guests through the stories, craftsmanship and flavour profiles behind the annual Special Releases series, widely regarded as one of the most anticipated on the global whisky calendar.

‎Each expression carried a distinct character. The Singleton Glen Ord 17 Year Old offered rich orchard fruits and vanilla sweetness, while Clynelish Waxen Sun introduced its signature waxy texture and honeyed notes. Lagavulin 12 Year Old delivered the bold peat smoke and maritime character associated with Islay distilling.

‎“If you have been taking wine, you need some water to cleanse your palette, otherwise the whisky will confuse it,” Kaita guided guests during the session.

‎Attention, however, gradually shifted to Oban 12 Year Old and Talisker 14 Year Old.

‎Produced by two distilleries separated by geography but united by coastal influence, the whiskies highlighted how location shapes flavour. Oban 12 Year Old, from one of Scotland’s smallest and oldest distilleries situated between the Highlands and Islands, stood out for its balance of fruit, spice and coastal character.

‎Elegant yet complex, it reinforced Oban’s reputation as a bridge between Scotland’s whisky regions.

‎Talisker 14 Year Old, distilled on the rugged Isle of Skye, presented a more assertive profile. Known for its maritime character, peppery spice and lingering smoke, it reflected the wild coastal environment that defines the distillery’s identity.

‎As Kaita and Baguma unpacked each expression and encouraged guests to engage their senses, compare notes and question flavour perceptions, the evening unfolded as a premium whisky masterclass.

‎The experience took an unexpected turn when an illusionist entered the room, shifting the atmosphere entirely.

‎Using flavour perception as an entry point, he challenged guests to reconsider how expectation shapes experience. What followed was a series of mentalism and illusion performances that left the audience alternately amused, puzzled and astonished.

‎At one moment, guests reacted in disbelief as the performer appeared to touch participants without making physical contact. Moments later, he revealed information written on cards that guests had been holding throughout the evening, sparking gasps and animated debate.

‎The performance blended seamlessly with the whisky tasting theme, reinforcing the idea of perception versus reality. Just as guests questioned aromas and flavours in their glasses, the illusionist pushed them to question what they saw and felt.

‎By the end of the night, conversations flowed as freely as the whisky. Some guests debated whether Oban or Talisker stood out most, while others remained absorbed in trying to decode the evening’s illusions.

‎What united them was appreciation for the rarity of the experience. With The Singleton Glen Ord 17 Year Old, Clynelish Waxen Sun, Lagavulin 12 Year Old, Oban 12 Year Old and Talisker 14 Year Old all featured, the night offered a rare opportunity to sample a collective showcase few whisky lovers ever encounter in one setting.

‎For a few hours in Naalya, Dim The Lights became more than a whisky venue, it became a space where rare spirits, storytelling and a touch of magic came together to create an unforgettable experience.
