Hundreds of mourners from across Uganda gathered at Kiwanga Village in Mukono District on Saturday to pay their final respects to former Kampala Kadhi and renowned Islamic preacher, Sheikh Abdu-Kadri Mbogo, who was laid to rest at his ancestral home.

The funeral drew religious leaders, government officials, politicians, Muslim scholars, business figures and members of the public, all coming together to honour a man whose 96-year life was defined by service to Islam, education and community development.

Sheikh Hafiz Muhammad Harunah Bukenya, the Second Deputy Mufti of Uganda, represented the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, at the burial ceremony.

In his address, Sheikh Bukenya urged Muslims to reflect on the inevitability of death and to live in accordance with Islamic teachings.

“The newly born child is first made to listen to the Azan. The call is completed with a funeral prayer performed when a person departs this world. Therefore, remember that death is inevitable. Always strive to do Allah’s will and live righteous lives in order to attain eternal happiness in paradise,” Sheikh Bukenya said.

He praised Sheikh Mbogo for a life of service, discipline and devotion, urging younger generations to emulate his example in faith and community leadership.

Other speakers described the late cleric as a humble, principled and selfless leader whose influence extended beyond religious circles into education and social development.

They highlighted his contribution to education through the establishment of Kiwanga UMEA Primary School, which was built on land he personally donated to serve the local community.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Sheikh Jowadi Mbogo described his father as a dedicated parent and public servant whose guidance extended to both his family and the wider Muslim community.

“He was a devoted father who always encouraged us to serve humanity, uphold good values, and remain committed to our faith. His legacy will continue to guide us and future generations,” Sheikh Jowadi Mbogo said.

Sheikh Abdu-Kadri Mbogo served the Muslim community for decades as a preacher and religious leader, earning respect for his commitment to Islamic teachings, education and community service.

He died at the age of 96, leaving behind widows, children, grandchildren and a legacy mourners said will continue to inspire generations.
