Bishop Kagodo Warns Buikwe Residents Against Witchcraft, Drug Abuse and Spiritism

The Bishop of Mukono Diocese, Rt. Rev. Enos Kitto Kagodo, has warned residents of Buikwe District against engaging in witchcraft, marijuana cultivation, and traditional spiritism, saying such practices continue to negatively affect communities and contribute to growing social and mental health challenges.

Speaking during his pastoral visit to SSI Parish at St. Stephen Church of Uganda–Zitwe in Ngogwe Archdeaconry, Bishop Kagodo said many people have suffered the consequences of drug abuse and deceptive spiritual practices.

«"Many people have ruined their lives through drug abuse and involvement in deceptive spiritual practices. Some eventually end up seeking treatment at Butabika Hospital. Christians must remain faithful to God and avoid practices that contradict His will," Bishop Kagodo said.»

The Bishop made the remarks after the Parish Priest, Rev. Moses Sabo Byekwaso Katumba, expressed concern over the increasing prevalence of marijuana cultivation, witchcraft, and traditional spiritual practices in the area.

Rev. Sabo noted that despite these challenges, the Church has remained committed to evangelism and spiritual transformation.

"Through our Healing and Deliverance Ministries and the Spiritual Hospital initiative at the parish headquarters, we continue to preach the Gospel and support people seeking spiritual freedom and transformation," Rev. Sabo said.»

During the visit, Bishop Kagodo confirmed 75 Christians into the Anglican faith and encouraged believers to support the construction of clergy houses, emphasizing the importance of having ministers live within the communities they serve.

"The ministry becomes more effective when clergy stay among the people they serve. I encourage Christians to support the construction of clergy residences to strengthen pastoral work," he said.»

The Bishop also challenged Christians to make productive use of church land by investing in income-generating agricultural activities such as coffee, banana, and cocoa growing.

"Church land should be utilized wisely. Projects such as coffee, banana, and cocoa cultivation can strengthen the Church financially while protecting its property from encroachment," Bishop Kagodo advised.»

Preaching on the diocesan weekly theme, "Stability Through Faith in God" based on 1 Samuel 30:1–35, Bishop Kagodo urged Christians to remain steadfast in their faith and trust in God's guidance.

"Faith in God gives believers courage, peace, and confidence to overcome challenges. Like David, we must trust God in difficult moments and rely on His intervention," he preached.»

The service witnessed a significant spiritual harvest as more than 100 people responded to the altar call and publicly accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour.

The Bishop's Chaplain, Rev. Joshua Lujja, led the converts in the prayer of salvation and offered guidance as they began their Christian journey, before Bishop Kagodo prayed for them and pronounced a special blessing upon their lives.

The Archdeacon of Ngogwe, Ven. Canon Stephen Kironde, commended Christians for their continued support towards the construction of the diocesan cathedral.

"Your commitment and generosity towards God's work are commendable. Remain steadfast in supporting the mission of the Church," Ven. Kironde said.»

Meanwhile, Buikwe District Chairperson George Wasswa applauded Bishop Kagodo's leadership and encouraged residents to embrace education and commercial agriculture.

"Parents should prioritize their children's education by ensuring they receive meals at school, while households should embrace commercial agriculture, especially coffee growing, to improve incomes and livelihoods," Wasswa said.»
