KAMPALA — Israel Kazibwe Kitooke has called on young people to adopt stronger financial discipline, saying saving and investment are key to escaping poverty and building long-term economic stability.
Kazibwe made the remarks during the inaugural BBS Business Forum 2026 held at Sheraton Kampala Hotel, where business leaders, economists and policymakers gathered to discuss Uganda’s economic outlook and preparations ahead of the upcoming national budget.
He told participants that many young people continue to struggle financially due to poor spending habits and a lack of investment culture.
“Young people should learn to save money and use it for productive investments instead of wasting it on things that do not add value to their lives,” he said.
The forum, organized by BBS Terefayina, brought together stakeholders from government, private sector and civil society to analyze Uganda’s economic performance and explore opportunities for growth.
Kazibwe also emphasized the importance of self-development and financial responsibility, urging youth to carefully assess their spending choices and focus on ventures that improve livelihoods and future security.
He highlighted the Buganda Kingdom’s Situla Omutindo initiative, describing it as a programme aimed at promoting quality, discipline and competitiveness in both products and services.
“Situla Omutindo encourages people to improve the quality of what they do. When quality becomes a priority, it increases competitiveness in the market and promotes development,” he said.
Speaking at the same forum, Patrick Ssembajjo said the event was designed to help Ugandans better understand the national budget and its impact on daily life, noting that many citizens struggle to interpret economic policy documents.
He said the annual forum would serve as a platform to simplify economic discussions and connect experts with ordinary citizens.
Participants at the event also encouraged entrepreneurs to formalize their businesses and adopt digital tools to expand operations and access wider markets.
Agricultural experts who attended the forum advised farmers to prepare for opportunities linked to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Uganda will co-host with Kenya and Tanzania, urging increased production and investment in commercial farming.
Representatives from institutions including KACITA, URSB, KCCA, PSFU and NACORI attended the forum, alongside government officials and private sector players.
Organisers said the BBS Business Forum will be held annually to strengthen public understanding of economic policy, business opportunities and national development priorities.
