Teachers in Busoga schools have revealed why students from the region are performing poorly in national exams.
The teachers shared this information with Minister of State for Primary Education Rose Mary Sseninde during the closure of a weeklong seminar for selected teachers in Jinja.
Some of the issues raised include lack of teachers quarters, text books and misuse of UPE funds by head teachers.
For the past four years, schools in Busoga sub region have ranked poorly in in Primary Leaving Examinations and Uganda Certificate of Education examinations.
The continual poor performance has alarmed leaders from the region who who decided to brainstorm with educationists on how to stop this slide.
Through the Busoga Education Innitiative, 223 selected teachers from 22 of the worst performing schools have been undergoing a refresher course for a week.
During the closure of the seminar, the teachers didnot have kind words for government's failure to play their part in improving the education sector.
The teachers say much as they are blamed for the poor performance in schools but government and parents who are crucial stakeholders have also failed to play their roles.
The ministers, however, did not buy this line of argument pointing out that their colleagues in other regions are operating under similar circumstances but they are performing better. Seninde had been accompanied by Karamoja Affairs minister Moses Kizige.
Agnes Lumonya one of the brains behind Busoga Educations Innitiative revealed their plans to revive the education in Busoga such that regions regains its former glory.
