Leaders of the Democratic Party (DP) have thrown their full support behind Norbert Mao’s bid for the position of Speaker of Parliament, describing him as a capable and experienced leader ready to tackle corruption and restore public confidence in the legislature.

The endorsement was made during a meeting of party leaders and Kampala district representatives at the party headquarters along Balintuma Road, where members rallied behind Mao’s candidacy.

Speaking during the meeting, DP spokesperson Kennedy Mutenyo called on Ugandans across the country to support Mao, saying his leadership would go beyond party interests.

“Mao is not going to be a Speaker for DP alone, but a Speaker for all Ugandans,” Mutenyo said. “He has the experience and the commitment to fight corruption, which is one of the biggest challenges affecting Parliament and the country.”

Mutenyo said corruption remains a major obstacle to effective governance, adding that Parliament must take a leading role in addressing the vice.

“Corruption is affecting all Ugandans, and it is important that we have leadership in Parliament that is ready to confront it head-on,” he added.

Party leaders at the meeting expressed confidence that Mao’s track record and leadership qualities make him a strong candidate to drive reforms and strengthen accountability within the legislative arm of government.

They said his vision for Parliament of Uganda centres on transparency, inclusiveness, and serving the interests of all citizens, regardless of political affiliation.

The DP’s endorsement signals a strategic push to position Mao as a national candidate in the race for Speaker, with the party appealing to a broader base of support beyond its ranks.
