One person has been confirmed dead and six others injured following a fatal road accident at Papoli along the Tororo–Jinja Highway in Tororo District.
According to police, the crash involved a white Toyota Hiace, registration number UBR 082F, commonly used as a public service taxi.
The deceased has been identified as Immaculate Were, a 55-year-old passenger and resident of Bison ‘B’ Cell in Western Division, Tororo Municipality.
Six other passengers, whose identities had not yet been established by press time, sustained critical injuries and were rushed to Tororo General Hospital for treatment. Some were later referred to private health facilities for specialised care.
Preliminary police findings indicate that the taxi was travelling from Tororo to Jinja at high speed when the driver reportedly lost control while overtaking at Papoli, causing the vehicle to overturn عدة times.
Authorities have attributed the crash to careless overtaking and overspeeding.
Traffic officers visited the scene and conveyed the deceased’s body to Tororo Municipal Mortuary pending a postmortem examination. The wreckage of the vehicle was later towed to the police yard for inspection.
The Uganda Police Force spokesperson for Bukedi South region, Moses J Mugwe, said investigations are ongoing.
He urged motorists to exercise caution, respect traffic regulations, and use the roads responsibly to reduce accidents in the region and across the country.
