Driver who Knocked Kikuube LC5 Chairman Dead Arrested in Moyo
Peter Banura Araali who was the Kikuube LC5 chairman died in a road accident.

Police Flying Squad has  arrested Tom Mugabirwe, the driver accused of knocking dead Kikuube District Chairman Peter Banura last week.

Mugabirwe was arrested on Tuesday night at around 10:30 p.m. in a hotel room at Hotel Valley Breeze in Moyo District.

The Albertine Region Police spokesperson, Julius Hakiza, confirmed the arrest and said arrangements are underway to transfer the suspect to Kikuube District, where the incident occurred.

Hakiza noted that security forces in the Albertine Region coordinated with their counterparts in the West Nile sub-region to apprehend the suspect.

Last week, police in the Albertine Region also arrested Solomon Sabiiti, 61, the owner of the vehicle involved in the accident.

Sabiiti was later arraigned before the Hoima Chief Magistrate’s Court, presided over by George Kunihira, and charged with failing to keep records of his driver.

While at the police station, Sabiiti reportedly told investigators that he did not know who was driving his vehicle at the time of the crash, prompting authorities to charge him with failure to maintain employee records.

Banura, 48, died in a road accident along the Hoima–Fort Portal road on April 4, 2026.

The accident occurred at Butyamba Cell, Kikuube Town Council, in Kikuube District.

According to police reports, Banura had parked his official Toyota Hilux (UG 3400084) by the roadside and was speaking to a group of people when a speeding Toyota Hiace taxi (UBQ 853E), traveling from Fort Portal to Hoima, rammed into them, causing critical injuries.

Banura was rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police attributed the accident to speeding and reckless driving. The taxi driver had been on the run until his arrest.

Banura was laid to rest last Thursday at his ancestral home in Rumiina Cell, Buhimba Town Council, Kikuube District.
