Residents in Nansana Municipality have raised alarm over the deteriorating state of roads after a box body truck carrying bananas overturned and crashed onto a boda boda, leaving the rider seriously injured.
The accident occurred along the Jenina–Gganda road, which locals say is riddled with deep potholes and has become increasingly dangerous for road users.
According to eyewitnesses, the truck, registration number UA 678AK, was transporting bananas to Bampu in Nansana when it lost control after hitting large potholes in the middle of the road.
“The truck failed to navigate the potholes and overturned, falling onto a boda boda rider who was just minding his business,” one witness said. “This road has become a death trap.”
The truck landed on motorcycle number UMA 861FA, throwing the rider off and leaving him with serious injuries. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with residents rushing to help before authorities arrived.
Traffic police quickly responded to the scene and began managing the situation, directing traffic and supervising the transfer of the bananas to another vehicle.
“We had to clear the road and ensure safety as the goods were being offloaded,” a traffic officer at the scene said.
A towing truck later removed both the damaged truck and the motorcycle, which were taken to Mulubijji Police Station for further investigation.
Residents expressed frustration over what they described as government neglect, saying the poor condition of the road continues to put lives at risk.
“This road is full of potholes, some as big as graves,” another resident lamented. “We are tired of accidents happening here. Authorities must act.”
They called on Nansana Municipality to urgently repair the Jenina–Gganda road, noting that despite being within an urban area, it resembles a rural pathway.
Truck owners and traders also criticized the state of infrastructure, questioning why roads are left to deteriorate despite taxpayers contributing to government revenue.
“We pay taxes, but the roads are terrible,” one trader said. “Heavy trucks keep overturning because of these conditions, and innocent people are suffering.”
Locals now fear that unless immediate action is taken, more accidents could occur on the busy stretch.
