Youth Voices Take Center Stage at Uganda Water and Environment Week 2026 Debates

By | March 27, 2026

Youth from secondary schools and universities across the country took part in the 9th National Youth Debates and Public Speaking Finals held on the sidelines of the Uganda Water and Environment Week 2026, highlighting the growing role of young people in shaping conversations on sustainability and environmental protection.

The event was hosted at the International Resource Centre of the National Water and Sewerage Corporation and was held under the theme “Water and Environment for an Inclusive and Prosperous Uganda.”

The debates emphasized collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and practical solutions to environmental and water management challenges.

Representing the host institution, Dr. Babu Mohammed urged participants to see themselves as ambassadors of change and use the platform to exchange ideas and build networks rather than focus solely on competition.

He encouraged the youth to carry the lessons learned back to their communities and inspire others to take action on environmental issues.

The opening ceremony was officiated by Eng. Dominic Mucunguzi, Assistant Commissioner for Water Use Planning and Allocation at the Ministry of Water and Environment, who challenged participants to focus on practical solutions rather than rhetoric.

“Propose real, practical solutions. Don’t just debate to win,” he said. “Speak boldly, be heard, and don’t give up. Let’s be true advocates for change.”

During the debates, participants discussed issues such as water governance, climate resilience, and the role of innovation in sustainable development. They also debated motions on recognizing water as a justiciable right and prioritizing nature-based solutions for climate adaptation.

One youthful speaker emphasized the urgency of environmental action, saying, “If you find yourself with a cancer on the leg, you need radiotherapy—not just jelly to make it look good,” drawing attention to the need for serious and practical interventions to address environmental challenges.

The debates were organized by the Youth Subcommittee of Uganda Water and Environment Week, led by Edwin Muhumuza of Youth Go Green and Vice Chairperson Pamela Musimenta.

The initiative aims to equip young people with critical thinking, leadership, and advocacy skills while amplifying youth voices in national policy discussions.

The event is expected to produce recommendations that will contribute to Uganda’s broader policy discussions on water and environmental management, reinforcing the role of youth as key stakeholders in sustainable development.
