Government Innovation Drive Boosts Growth of Game Development in Uganda

Uganda’s growing investment in science, technology and innovation is creating new opportunities within the creative economy, with game development emerging as a promising sector for young innovators.

This momentum was evident during the recently concluded Game Jam 2026, a 24-hour hackathon that brought together developers, creatives and storytellers to demonstrate how government-supported initiatives are translating into practical platforms for skills development and industry growth.

Held under the Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) framework, the event received support from the Engineering Development and Innovation Center, which facilitated mentorship, participation and industry linkages for aspiring developers.

“Gaming is opening new doors for young people in Uganda, combining creativity and technology into real economic opportunities,” said Danze Edwin, a gamer and game show host.

Participants created games inspired by real-world themes such as conservation, food culture and environmental sustainability, highlighting the sector’s potential to go beyond entertainment. The project Endangered by Code Chaos emerged as the overall winner, followed by Nyanya Mbisi by Loop Studio and Last Hope by Night Owls.

Industry observers note that the growth of game development is opening opportunities across multiple fields, blending software engineering, design and storytelling while creating new career pathways for young people.

International gaming and blockchain expert Yasmina Boubnider Kazitani, who attended as a keynote speaker, emphasised the need to build globally competitive products rooted in local narratives and cultural experiences.

Participants are expected to continue receiving mentorship through Tech Anatomy to refine their ideas into viable commercial products. Organisers say the initiative forms part of broader efforts to build a sustainable gaming ecosystem through collaboration between government, industry and the creative sector.
