Ahead of tomorrow’s historic centennial celebrations of Kwar Adhola Moses Stephen Owor, residents of Tororo organized vibrant sporting activities to mobilise the community for the landmark event, expected to be graced by President Museveni.

The pre-celebration activities featured a 15-kilometre marathon and football tournaments, attracting hundreds of participants from across Uganda and neighboring Kenya.

The event blended fitness, cultural pride, and community unity as excitement builds toward the main ceremony.

Some participants said they were inspired by the cultural leader’s longevity, which they attribute to discipline and consistent physical activity.

“I have been told that the Kwar has lived this long because of the daily exercises he does. That is why I am running so that I can also live long like him,” said Jackson Oburu, one of the runners.

The activities were sponsored by the International Justice Mission, which used the platform to sensitize communities about domestic violence. According to the organization, six in every ten women in the country experience domestic abuse.

Eva Leni, Programs Officer at International Justice Mission, credited the cultural institution’s leadership for advancing the fight against gender-based violence in the district.

“The cultural institution under His Highness Moses Owor has strongly supported efforts to protect women. Domestic violence was once rampant, but interventions have significantly reduced the vice,” she said.

Winners in various categories walked away with trophies, medals, and cash prizes of one million shillings, as Tororo builds momentum ahead of the grand celebrations at Elgon View Primary School grounds tomorrow.

The Prime Minister of the cultural institution, Josel Obbo, said more than 20,000 people are expected to attend the event, including Luo communities from Kenya, representatives of cultural institutions across Uganda, and government officials.

“It will be a historic gathering. We have invited cultural leaders from across the country and many have confirmed their attendance,” Obbo noted.

Kwar Adhola is believed to be among the oldest-serving cultural leaders in Uganda. His subjects describe his age as a blessing, praising his wisdom and steady leadership.

“When he stands to speak, you would think he is much younger. He is knowledgeable and has led his people for years without conflict,” said Omollo Peter, a resident.

Residents also credit him with championing key development initiatives, including the establishment of a radio station, acquisition of palace land, and lobbying for a cultural institution university that is expected to be constructed soon.

As Tororo awaits the centennial celebrations, many see the milestone not only as a royal birthday, but as a tribute to enduring leadership and cultural heritage.
