Simon Kasirye of the National Unity Platform (NUP) has been declared the winner of the Jinja South Division Mayoral seat after a dramatic election that saw him collapse at the city tally centre.

Kasirye won with 5,035 votes, beating seven other contestants.

Anjoga Rogers, an independent candidate, came second with 3,819 votes, followed by Kitakule Faruwa of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) with 3,608 votes.

Musisi Mohammed, also an independent, received 1,290 votes, Maganda Abubaker of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) got 823 votes, Mutengu Umar of the People’s Progressive Front (PFF) secured 237 votes, Mwase Fred of the EPU polled 190 votes, and Nzogi Nassan, an independent, received 66 votes.

Kasirye's victory followed earlier hours when he collapsed while protesting what he described as vote irregularities at the tally centre.

He claimed that some declarations of results (DR) forms had been forged to favour Mr Faruwa and accused the NRM candidate of inflating his vote count.

On Wednesday, Jinja City returning officer Flavia Nakasi officially declared Kasirye the winner, confirming he will take office as the new mayor of Jinja South Division.
