The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, has commended Christians and partners for their support to refugees at Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Isingiro District, following a locally led emergency response to the crisis caused by fighting in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In a message shared on Tuesday, Archbishop Kaziimba said he visited Nakivale last year as part of activities marking the culmination of the Church’s locally led emergency response, which was launched at the beginning of 2025 to respond to the increasing influx of refugees and asylum seekers.
He noted that through their respective dioceses, Christians mobilized resources worth UGX 100 million, both in cash and in kind, to provide urgent support to refugees who were in dire need at the time.
The Archbishop added that the response was further strengthened by support from the Church’s partner, the Anglican Relief and Development Fund (ARDF).
“With this support, we managed to reach 6,766 refugees with food and non-food items,” Archbishop Kaziimba said.
He expressed deep gratitude to the Directorate of Household and Community Transformation (HCT) for lobbying for the support and for coordinating his visit to Nakivale Refugee Settlement.
Archbishop Kaziimba concluded by thanking God and all those who contributed, emphasizing the role of the Church in responding to humanitarian needs and standing in solidarity with vulnerable communities.
