The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Engineers Brigade is in the final stages of completing a new two-classroom block at Kanyankwanzi Primary School in Kabale District, a development set to significantly improve education infrastructure in the area.
Construction began on November 16, 2025, and is now 72 percent complete. Major structural works, including walling and plastering, are nearly finished, with painting and flooring remaining as the final tasks before handover.
Speaking at the site, acting Site Engineer Warrant Officer 11 Robert Byekwaso revealed that the project faced initial technical challenges following the demolition of the old structure.
“After bringing down the old building, we discovered that the ground required stabilization, which necessitated the use of hardcore. Despite this setback, the team has worked diligently, and in two weeks’ time—by December 28—we shall be able to hand over the completed structure,” he said.
WOII Byekwaso also highlighted the project’s positive socio-economic impact on the local community, noting that residents were employed as casual laborers during construction.
The initiative has received praise from local leaders. Reverend Robert Byarugaba, Parish Priest of Bukoora Church of Uganda, commended the UPDF Engineers Brigade for their professionalism and commitment to community development.
“The people here are very excited. This permanent building will greatly improve the learning environment for our children and stands as a strong symbol of partnership between the UPDF and the community,” he said.
Once completed, the new classroom block is expected to ease congestion at the school and provide a safer, more conducive learning environment for both pupils and teachers. The project is scheduled for official handover on January 6, 2025.
This initiative is part of the UPDF Engineers Brigade’s broader mandate to support national development through infrastructure projects that directly benefit communities across Uganda.
