Government urged not to favour foreign filmmakers over Ugandans

Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) and filmmakers have challenged the government to inject more investment into the film industry in order for it to grow.

The filmmakers noted that Uganda can greatly benefit from a successful film industry like Nigeria, Ghana and India and do.

The filmmakers had gathered at UCC Bugolobi headquarters to celebrate the success of the just concluded Uganda Film Festival but also ponder on some of the loopholes.

UCC multimedia head Meddie Kaggwa noted that if the Ugandan government gave as much support to local filmmakers as it does to international film projects, the industry would be more developed than it is now.

Kaggwa said that instead of aiding the local filmmaker, procedural demands of shooting in Uganda sometimes end up creating obstacles towards production.

Film makers, content producers and partners of the Uganda film festival today gathered at Uganda communications commission headquarters in Bugolobi to celebrate the success of the just concluded Uganda Film Festival but also ponder on some of the loopholes.

It is here that the head of multimedia UCC  Meddie Kagwa  pointed at the limited government attention and support towards the local film industry industry compared to the support tenders to international film makers.

Next Media Chief of Strategy Joe Kigozi pointed at the need for structure in the film industry so as to compete uniquely on the both local and international market.

Ahead of the 2019 film festival preparations, UCC and partners have prepared a road plan for the success of the industry.

Among these is the film one stop centre.

In Uganda, the film industry was born in the early 1893 when its first move was produced and has since then continued to grow.

However like any other industry, is been slowed down by numerous challenges inclusive funding, structure and limited government support.
