As campaigns for the 2026 elections heat up, Gen. Peter Elwelu, the former Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, has told residents of Soroti City West that political opposition to the government is “evil,” drawing parallels with the biblical account of God casting the devil out of heaven.
Gen. Elwelu was speaking during a mobilisation rally in Orwadai ward in support of NRM flag bearer David Calvin Echodu, who is contesting the Soroti City West parliamentary seat against incumbent Jonathan Ebwalu of the FDC.
Addressing a large gathering, Elwelu argued that opposition had existed “from the beginning of creation,” claiming that any force resisting established leadership works against divine order.
“Opposition started from heaven,” Gen. Elwelu said.
“When God threw the devil down, that was the first opposition. So any opposition fighting government is evil and must be rejected.”
The remarks drew mixed reactions from the crowd, with some cheering while others appeared visibly uncomfortable.
Elwelu urged the people of Orwadai to rally behind Echodu, whom he described as a patriotic young leader with the energy and discipline to drive development in Soroti City West.
“You have a son who respects authority, who respects this country, and who will work with government to bring services closer to you,” he said. “Echodu represents progress, not confusion.”
Echodu also addressed supporters, calling for unity, discipline, and development-focused politics.
He pledged to transform Soroti City West through improved infrastructure, better opportunities for youth, and strengthened community services.
Several NRM mobilisers noted that Gen. Elwelu’s presence underscored how seriously the ruling party is taking the Soroti City West race, which has attracted significant attention from both government and opposition camps.
The rally drew a strong turnout, with NRM supporters in Orwadai pledging to intensify door-to-door mobilisation in favour of Echodu.
Political activity in Soroti City West continues to rise as the Teso sub-region gears up for the 2026 elections.
