Energy Ministry Clarifies UEDCL Management Concerns, Urges Public to Await Official Findings
According to the Ministry, the UEDCL Board was tasked with conducting a thorough, transparent, and time-bound internal inquiry into concerns raised during a routine audit and performance review.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development has issued a statement addressing widespread media reports regarding a letter attributed to the Prime Minister directing the halting of terminations within the senior management of the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL).

In a press statement dated 5th December 2025, the Ministry confirmed that it is aware of the circulating information and has also received a comprehensive performance assessment of UEDCL from the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA).

This directive was intended to ensure clarity, accountability, and due process in the management of the national electricity distributor.

“The Ministry required the Board of the UEDCL investigate and report to the Ministry in a clear, actionable, and time-bound manner; make corrective actions to address the identified lapses and restore confidence in UEDCL,” the statement reads.

The Ministry emphasised that the Board was instructed to carry out a standard internal inquiry into all issues flagged, ensuring objectivity and fairness while safeguarding institutional integrity.

It confirmed that the Board is now in the final stages of completing this inquiry and will soon submit its findings.

Importantly, the Ministry dismissed rumours of staff dismissals at UEDCL, clarifying that no member of senior management has been removed pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

“To date, no staff member has been dismissed from UEDCL awaiting the finding of the internal inquiry, and we encourage the public to allow this procedure to be concluded without speculation. However, whoever will be found culpable will be handled in line with the relevant law and company policies,” the Ministry stated.

The Government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that Uganda’s electricity sector remains transparent, reliable, and professionally managed.

The Ministry assured the public that it will continue to work closely with all relevant government bodies and will officially brief Cabinet on the matter once the inquiry is concluded.

The statement highlighted three key areas the Ministry is committed to safeguarding:

Reliable power supply to consumers,Professional and accountable management within the electricity subsector, Confidence in the performance and governance of the national electricity sector

“The Ministry will continue to work with all relevant Government entities and will subsequently brief the entire Government in Cabinet, in order to ensure that the consumer receives a reliable and continued electrical power supply; that the electricity subsector promotes accountability, due process and professionalism in the management of the distribution network; and that there is confidence in the management and performance of the national electricity sector,” the statement said.

The Ministry assured the public that it remains committed to ensuring that Uganda’s electricity distribution system is managed safely, efficiently, and in the best interest of all citizens.
