The Ministry of Works and Transport has temporarily suspended operations of the MV Kalangala ferry, halting its regular services between Entebbe–Nakiwogo and Kalangala–Lutoboka.
The suspension, announced on December 3, 2025, comes after the vessel experienced emergency mechanical issues affecting its engines.
In a public notice, Permanent Secretary Bageya Waiswa said the ministry had acted promptly to address the problem.
“Our team is undertaking emergency repair interventions on the ferry engines, to restore the ferry to normal and safe operating conditions,” he said, urging the public for patience while engineers work to resolve the malfunction.
He added that the ministry would notify users once services resume. “We shall update the public when the ferry service resumes,” Waiswa said.
The MV Kalangala is a critical transport link for residents, tourists, and businesses, connecting Kalangala District to the mainland.
It is heavily relied upon for movement of people, goods, medical supplies, and access to essential services in both directions.
The Entebbe–Kalangala route is especially important for tourism and trade along Lake Victoria.
During the suspension, travellers have been advised to use alternative vessels.
“The general public and users of MV Kalangala Ferry are advised to use the MV Ssesse and MV Rafiki, which operate between Bukakata–Luuku and Nakiwogo–Lutoboka crossings,” Waiswa said.
The ministry stressed that safety remains the top priority, noting that restoring the ferry to full operational standards is crucial for maintaining reliable lake transport.
