As Uganda prepares for the 2026 general elections, concerns over potential election violence, voter bribery, and other irregularities are taking centre stage in Karamoja.
Memories of chaotic NRM primaries, which saw clashes between rival groups and reports of intimidation, remain fresh in the minds of local residents.
During a stakeholders’ meeting organized by the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) in Moroto, regional leaders acknowledged persistent challenges that contribute to electoral tension, particularly inadequate voter sensitization.
They noted that limited civic awareness among the electorate often leads to misunderstandings and conflict during campaigns and voting.
Regional Election Officer Linos Okori Lima said his office is intensifying voter education efforts in partnership with sub-county leaders.
“We are addressing voter sensitization by engaging communities through radios and public-address systems during market days to reach more people,” Lima said.
He added that, while campaigns have largely remained non-violent, challenges such as torn campaign posters and inappropriate language by some candidates have emerged.
Regional Human Rights Officer Paul Piramoe emphasized that the stakeholders’ meeting was designed to foster peaceful elections in Karamoja.
“We invited a broad range of participants—including students, teachers, politicians, security personnel, civil society actors, elders, and media representatives—to collectively identify ways to prevent electoral violence,” Piramoe said.
Local leaders and UHRC officials expressed optimism that improved coordination, sustained voter education, and active community engagement can help Karamoja avoid the violent incidents experienced in previous electoral cycles.
They urged all political actors to prioritize peace, respect for electoral processes, and constructive dialogue as campaigns intensify.
The meeting marked another step in regional preparations to safeguard democratic processes, highlighting a shared commitment by authorities, civil society, and community leaders to uphold peaceful, transparent, and inclusive elections in Karamoja.
