Kitagwenda District authorities have launched two piped water projects valued at Shs128 million to improve access to clean and safe water for thousands of households.
The facilities, unveiled on Friday, will supply water to twelve villages in Kengyeya, Bujumiro, and Nyakasenyi parishes in Buhanda Sub-county, where residents have long depended on shallow wells, swamps, and seasonal water points.
District Water Officer Peter Sseremba said works include establishing a production borehole that will feed the piped system through reservoirs and pumps.
He noted that the borehole is expected to generate at least 5,000 litres of water per hour, enough to meet the needs of the targeted villages.
Buhanda Sub-county Chairperson Silvano Isingoma welcomed the project, saying water scarcity has remained a longstanding challenge.
He said many residents still walk long distances to fetch clean water, a burden the new system is expected to ease.
Although Kitagwenda’s safe water coverage stands at 83 percent, officials say disparities persist in several communities that continue to rely on unsafe water sources.
Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Moses Akankwatsa urged residents to continue boiling drinking water as government expands safe supply.
Deputy Resident District Commissioner Benjamin Tumusiime cautioned the contractor against substandard work and emphasised the need to protect wetlands, which he described as vital water sources for the district.
Officials say the new water system is expected to reduce waterborne diseases, save residents long hours spent fetching water, and improve productivity and overall wellbeing.
