Energy Minister Ruth Nankabirwa has condemned the vandalism of the 132kV Owen Falls–Mukono North–Namanve South transmission line, describing the attack on the tower as an act of outright criminality and economic sabotage.
The vandalism led to the collapse of one of the towers, resulting in the loss of a life. In her statement, Nankabirwa urged security agencies—including the Uganda Police and UPDF—to treat the incident with utmost seriousness and ensure those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.
“This is unacceptable. The Uganda Police, UPDF and all sister security agencies should treat this matter with the utmost seriousness. Those responsible will be hunted down and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” she said.
Nankabirwa warned that tampering with national power infrastructure amounts to an attack on public safety, economic stability and the country’s development efforts.
“Ugandans must understand: vandalising power infrastructure is not just theft, it is an attack on national stability, public safety and our economic progress. We will not tolerate it,” she stressed.
The Minister appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report anyone seen tampering with electricity installations. She confirmed that restoration works had begun and extended condolences to the family of the deceased.
“We extend our condolences to the bereaved family and restoration works are underway with urgency,” Nankabirwa said.
