The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, met with clan leaders and their respective prime ministers during their annual gathering at the Kingdom Headquarters in Bulange, Mengo, on Wednesday.
In his address, the Katikkiro called on clan leaders to intensify efforts to strengthen the clan system, emphasizing that vibrant clans are essential for advancing Buganda’s broader mission of cultural and societal restoration.
He reminded attendees of the six key guidelines outlined by the Kabaka on September 18, 2025, during a special session of the Council of Clan Leaders at Bulange.
“The clans form the foundation of Buganda’s cultural life, shaping naming traditions, cultural ceremonies, and many aspects of everyday life for the Baganda. Clan leaders must dedicate themselves to preserving and enhancing the relevance of the clans,” Mayiga stated.
He reiterated the Kabaka’s six directives, which include preserving the kingdom’s history, understanding the Kabaka’s dual role as Ssaabataka and central pillar of the kingdom, promoting development within clans, ensuring education for the children of clan leaders, supporting clan descendants contributing to society, and strengthening leadership structures by maintaining a Katikkiro and functional governing council in every clan.
Mayiga instructed clan prime ministers to closely supervise clan programs and guide leadership meetings, enabling them to advise clan heads on priorities that advance development.
He commended the Chairperson of the Council of Clan Leaders, Nnamwama Augustine Kizito Mutumba, for fostering unity among clan heads and encouraged continued collaboration with other leaders serving under the Kabaka.
In his remarks, Mutumba highlighted initiatives by the Council of Clan Leaders, including monthly leadership meetings, cultural heritage training sessions, and visits to ancestral sites.
He expressed gratitude to the Katikkiro, the Kabaka’s Cabinet, and the Ministry of Culture for their commitment to supporting clans and promoting cultural heritage.
Mutumba also raised concerns the Council wishes addressed, such as the formal introduction of new clan heads to the palace, the restoration of clan shrines, and other culturally significant matters. The Katikkiro assured him that these issues would receive attention and that practical solutions would be implemented.
The meeting was attended by the Speaker of the Buganda Parliament, Patrick Luwaga Mugumbule; the Minister of Heritage, Palaces, Tombs, Tourism and Security, Anthony Wamala; and the Minister for Information, Mobilization, and the Kingdom Spokesperson, Israel Kazibwe Kitooke, among other dignitaries.
