The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has met with clan leaders and their respective prime ministers during their annual gathering at the Kingdom Headquarters in Bulange, Mengo, on Wednesday.
In his address, Mayiga called on the clan leaders to intensify efforts to strengthen the clan system so that it regains full vibrancy and contributes more effectively to the broader mission of restoring Buganda to its peak.
He reminded the leaders of the six key guidelines outlined by the Kabaka on September 18, 2025, during a special Council of Clan Leaders session.
“The clans form the foundation of Buganda’s cultural life, influencing naming traditions, cultural ceremonies, and key aspects of everyday life for the Baganda. It is therefore essential for clan leaders to dedicate themselves to matters that reinforce the position and relevance of the clans,” Mayiga said.
The Kabaka’s six guidelines, reiterated by Mayiga, include preserving the kingdom’s history, understanding the Kabaka’s dual role as Ssaabataka and central pillar of the kingdom, promoting development within the clans, and ensuring education for children of clan leaders.
The other sare supporting clan descendants making notable contributions, and strengthening leadership structures by ensuring every clan has a Katikkiro and a functional governing council aligned with the Ssaabataka.
Mayiga further instructed clan prime ministers to closely supervise clan programs and guide leadership meetings to offer informed advice to the heads of clans on priorities that will advance clan development.
He also commended the Chairperson of the Council of Clan Leaders, Nnamwama Augustine Kizito Mutumba, for promoting unity among clan heads and encouraged continued collaboration under the Kabaka’s leadership.
In response, Mutumba highlighted several ongoing initiatives, including monthly leadership meetings, cultural heritage training sessions, and visits to ancestral sites.
He expressed gratitude to the Katikkiro and the Kabaka’s Cabinet for their dedicated work in cultural and clan matters and commended the Ministry of Culture for engaging with high-performing clans.
Mutumba also raised issues for further attention, including the formal introduction of new clan heads to the palace, restoration of clan shrines, and other culturally significant matters. Mayiga assured that these concerns would be addressed and solutions implemented.
The meeting was attended by the Speaker of the Buganda Parliament, Patrick Luwaga Mugumbule; the Minister of Heritage, Palaces, Tombs, Tourism and Security, Anthony Wamala; and the Minister for Information, Mobilization, and Kingdom Spokesperson, Israel Kazibwe Kitooke, among other dignitaries.
