Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has applauded members of the South Western Taxi Owners and Drivers Association for launching a voluntary campaign to mobilise support for President Yoweri Museveni ahead of the 2026 elections.
Addressing the group on Saturday evening in Mbarara City, Tayebwa said the association which brings together taxi drivers and owners from 22 districts had taken an initiative that reflects what he described as “genuine appreciation” for the President’s leadership over the past four decades.
Tayebwa, who was accompanied by Eng. Jonard, said the mobilisation drive was not orchestrated by the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) but was an independent effort by ordinary citizens.
He noted that such grassroots activities were essential in safeguarding what he called the country’s “hard-earned gains.”
“We have come from far as a country, and appreciating the President who has brought us this far is the least we can do,” Tayebwa said.
He urged similar initiatives across Uganda to ensure what he termed an overwhelming vote for Museveni in January 2026.
He added that taxi drivers play a key role in community mobilisation due to their daily interactions with the public and predicted they would help increase voter turnout by spreading the NRM message as they transport passengers.
The South Western Taxi Owners and Drivers Association launched their mobilisation campaign during a gathering in Mbarara City, signalling what NRM officials hope will be a wider grassroots push as the election season intensifies.
