Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has praised the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) for improving the efficiency of National ID delivery, noting that the new IDs are of higher quality and better design compared to the previous ones.

Tayebwa made the remarks after collecting his own National ID at NIRA headquarters in Kampala, where he applauded the authority for making significant progress in streamlining ID issuance and collection.

“In my view, the new ID looks much better compared to the old one. I commend NIRA for the great work it is doing to deliver IDs quickly,” Tayebwa said.

While commending NIRA’s efforts, Tayebwa urged the authority to establish more collection centers at the parish level to ease access and reduce the burden of long-distance travel for citizens seeking their IDs.

“I encourage them to set up collection centres at the nearest possible locations within communities, especially at parish level,” he added.

The Deputy Speaker emphasised the importance of obtaining National IDs, describing them as a key requirement for accessing most government services. He also called on parents to register their children, revealing that about 13 million children in Uganda have not yet been registered.

“Dear parents, spare time to take your children for registration. In the coming years, without an ID, it will be difficult to access government services,” Tayebwa cautioned.

NIRA continues to expand its ID registration and issuance program across the country, with ongoing efforts to decentralise services and make identification more accessible to all citizens.
