IGP Byakagaba Urges Rwenzori Officers to Embrace Area Policing
Strong partnerships between the police, cultural leaders, and local authorities will help us address security challenges more effectively

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abbas Byakagaba, has called on police officers in the Rwenzori East region to adopt area policing as part of efforts to strengthen crime prevention and enhance community security.

Speaking during a visit to Kasese District, Byakagaba emphasised the need for vigilance, coordination, and teamwork among officers to ensure more effective policing in the region.

He commended the officers for their swift and coordinated response during the November 1st attacks on Kasese Barracks, saying their actions demonstrated professionalism and commitment to maintaining peace.

“The success of our operations depends on teamwork and proactive engagement with the communities we serve,” Byakagaba said, urging officers to remain alert and continue collaborating closely with local residents.

As part of his visit, the IGP also paid a courtesy call to the Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu leadership, led by Prime Minister Benson Kule Baritazale, where he appealed for greater cooperation between cultural institutions and law enforcement agencies.

He encouraged the Obusinga officials to support police efforts by providing timely intelligence and participating in local security initiatives such as the Subcounty Policing Model, which aims to strengthen grassroots security networks.

“Strong partnerships between the police, cultural leaders, and local authorities will help us address security challenges more effectively,” Byakagaba noted.

In addition, the IGP held discussions with security stakeholders and religious leaders in the region, seeking their views on developing sustainable strategies to address persistent security threats in Kasese and the broader Rwenzori sub-region.

Police said the consultations are part of an ongoing effort to build community-centred security systems and promote lasting peace in the area.
