According to Ssewanyana, such manipulation denies voters the opportunity to freely choose their leaders.

Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana has attributed the rising number of unopposed NRM candidates in elections to the ruling party’s use of power, rather than the Opposition’s weakness.

Ssewanyana noted that the Opposition has consistently tried to field candidates nationwide, but external factors often hinder fair competition.

He alleged that influential figures within the NRM collaborate with the Police and the Electoral Commission to block Opposition candidates from being nominated.

These practices, he argued, often involve financial influence and abuse of power, allowing the ruling party to secure unopposed nominations and undermining democratic processes.
