Albert’s Kabagema's 30-Year Journey  as Taxi Driver in Nakawa Celebrated by Uganda Waragi

Albert Kabagema has been driving taxis in Kampala for nearly 30 years. If you’ve ever caught a ride from Nakawa Stage, chances are you’ve met him — kind, humble, soft-spoken, and always ready with a smile.

Kabagema’s story is one of grit and grace. When his father couldn’t afford school fees, he was forced to drop out of school. But as a young boy, he refused to let this setback define his future. Determined to change his story, he took on menial jobs, working as a tout, commonly known as a conductor. Behind this lay a vision for something better.

Driven by ambition, Albert embarked on a journey to learn how to drive. In 1995, he got behind the wheel — and never looked back. From driving someone else’s taxi to eventually owning his own, his resilience has paid off.

“I’ve been in this business for a long time and I love it,” he says. “It’s helped me build a home, buy two plots of land, and educate my children. I didn’t get the chance to finish school, but I’ve made sure my kids do.”

Kabagema's story perfectly aligns with the brand ethos of Uganda Waragi, embodying true Ugandan spirit — as taxis remain a lifeline of transport and community across the country.

To recognize his years of service and contribution to the community, Uganda Waragi appreciated Albert with a shs 1 million fuel voucher as part of its “So UG, So 60” campaign, celebrating the brand’s 60th anniversary and its connection to everyday Ugandans.

An excited Kabagema expressed his gratitude to Uganda Waragi and commended the brand for acknowledging his impact on the community.

“This is a great boost to my business. With the recent increase in fuel prices during this festive season, this gift is going to save me a great deal. I am very grateful to Uganda Waragi because this will enable me to save the money I was using for fuel to purchase another taxi,” he added.

Speaking during the award handover at Nakawa Taxi Stage, Hillary Baguma, Brand Manager for Mainstream Spirits at Uganda Breweries, explained why Albert was chosen for the recognition.

“Albert represents the true Ugandan spirit — hardworking, hopeful, and determined. His journey is very inspirational, from driving someone’s taxi to owning his own. As Uganda Waragi, we’re shining a light on people like him who make a real difference, even if they don’t always get noticed.”

Uganda Waragi’s campaign not only celebrates 60 years as Uganda’s favourite drink, but also honours ordinary Ugandans like Albert — the men and women who keep the country moving, both literally and figuratively.
