NRM, NUP, Independent Face Off in Rukiga Race

By | November 5, 2025

As Uganda edges closer to the 2026 general elections, the Rukiga District Woman Member of Parliament seat is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched contests in the region.

The race has attracted three formidable candidates one from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), another from the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), and an independent contender all determined to represent the women of Rukiga in the next Parliament.

Leading the race on the NRM ticket is Dr. Sylvia Arinaitwe, the former Deputy Executive Director of the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC). Dr. Arinaitwe entered the political scene with momentum after defeating the incumbent MP, Caroline Kamusime, in the NRM party primaries.

Her victory signaled a shift within the ruling party’s local politics and positioned her as a strong contender for the district’s top seat for women.

Representing the red umbrella of the National Unity Platform (NUP) is Jackline Jolly Tukamushaba, who brings with her the spirit of the “new Uganda” message championed by the party.

This marks the first serious attempt by NUP to establish its presence in Rukiga District politics, traditionally seen as an NRM stronghold. Tukamushaba’s candidacy is expected to test how far NUP’s influence has spread beyond the urban centers into rural Western Uganda.

Completing the trio is Hellen Kobutesi, who has entered the race as an independent candidate. Her participation adds an interesting twist to the political dynamics, as she seeks to rally voters who may be disillusioned with party politics and prefer an independent voice in Parliament.

With all three candidates actively engaging the electorate, the Rukiga Woman MP race promises to be one of high energy, contrasting visions, and strong female leadership.

As campaigns intensify, voters will be closely watching to see whose message resonates most with the people of Rukiga — the continuity of the NRM, the change promised by NUP, or the independence of a fresh, unaffiliated voice.

One thing is certain: come 2026, Rukiga District will witness a defining moment in its political history.
