The Police have released a set of security and traffic guidelines ahead of the nomination of Parliamentary election candidates scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday this week.
According to the Electoral Commission’s (EC) tentative programme, the nominations will take place at designated centres across the country.
Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke announced that access to nomination venues will be restricted to candidates and officially invited persons to help manage crowds and maintain order.
“Access to nomination centres will be restricted to invited persons and candidates to control the number of attendees,” Kituuma said.
He added that traffic around the nomination centres will be closely regulated to ensure smooth movement and prevent congestion.
Police will also enforce EC regulations on candidate convoys. “According to the Electoral Commission regulations, each candidate’s convoy must not exceed two vehicles, with no more than 10 occupants per vehicle. Candidates are not allowed to hold processions,” Kituuma explained.
The police spokesperson further noted that all laws related to elections, public order, and traffic management will be strictly enforced throughout the nomination period.
“Citizens’ rights and peace should not be disrupted by nomination activities or related activities,” he warned.
Kituuma also urged candidates planning post-nomination rallies to coordinate with local police commanders (DPCs and RPCs) to agree on appropriate venues. He cautioned against holding rallies in busy or sensitive areas.
“Nominees are advised to avoid holding rallies in locations such as markets, near schools or hospitals to prevent disruption of businesses and traffic,” he said.
Police appealed to the public to remain calm and cooperative during the nomination exercise.
“All Ugandans are urged to promote peace and harmony throughout the nomination period,” Kituuma said.
In Kampala, the nomination exercise will be conducted at the EC headquarters, as hundreds of aspiring candidates vie for a chance to contest in the 2026 Parliamentary elections.
