Napak District is mourning the death of its District Education Officer (DEO), Joyce Nakoya, who passed away on September 30, 2025, at Mulago National Referral Hospital after a long battle with diabetes.
Family members said Nakoya had been admitted at St Kizito Hospital in Matany before being transferred to Mulago, where she spent a month in intensive care before succumbing.
Her passing has been described as a devastating loss to the education fraternity and to Karamoja as a whole.
James Ngiro, the Senior Environment Officer in Napak, hailed her as “one of the greatest staff and a mentor in the district,” noting that her approach to problem-solving was unique and irreplaceable.
In her hometown of Matany, grief was evident. Local photographer Francis Ochen said he closed his business upon hearing the news.
“The late was one of my loyal clients. This is a major loss to us all,” he said.
From the media fraternity, Timothy Eodu of Akica FM in Moroto called her “an iron educationist who offered selfless service,” while Evelyn Amollo, Station Manager at UBC Totore Radio, described her death as “very sad indeed.”
Nakoya is remembered as a tireless advocate for education and a guiding light for many in Napak District. Her colleagues and the wider community say her contribution to uplifting schools and inspiring young learners will remain her enduring legacy.ce?
