MTN MoMo Unveils Cross-Border Payments and Rewards Campaign

MTN Mobile Money Uganda (MTN MoMo) has launched a new campaign dubbed “Power to Be Borderless” to expand cross-border transactions and reward customers.

The initiative, announced Wednesday, enables mobile money transfers between Uganda and Tanzania and introduces a remittance partnership with Dubai Duty Free.

MTN MoMo said the campaign is part of its wider strategy to enhance financial inclusion and ease payments for Ugandans at home and abroad.

Speaking at the launch, MTN MoMo’s Chief Commercial Officer, Keith Tukei, said the new service is designed to improve convenience for customers while creating new opportunities.

“With the Power to Be Borderless campaign, we are giving Ugandans the ability to stay connected to loved ones and business opportunities across borders with convenience and confidence,” Tukei said.

“Every transaction is not just secure and fast, but it also brings customers closer to exciting rewards.”

He added that the campaign reflects MTN MoMo’s mission to drive financial inclusion by facilitating seamless transactions for families, traders, professionals, and the diaspora community.

Under the promotion, Ugandans sending money through MTN MoMo’s international remittance partners will automatically qualify for draws to win fully paid trips, while recipients in Uganda will stand a chance to win shopping vouchers worth 200,000 shillings, gift hampers, and other prizes.

MTN MoMo’s Manager of Remittances and Interoperability, Shamim Fatumah Kavuma, said the service will particularly benefit cross-border traders.

“Any Ugandan with an MTN SIM card, especially traders importing goods from Tanzania, can pay for hotels, transportation, and goods seamlessly, using just their phone,” she said.

The company emphasized that the service also addresses challenges faced by Ugandans traveling overseas.

“We, at MTN MoMo in partnership with Terapay, have recognised a common challenge for Ugandans traveling abroad, accessing convenient payment solutions,” the company said.

MTN MoMo’s General Manager of Services and Company Secretary, Dennis Kakonge, said the new service removes the need for cash when shopping outside Uganda.

“Now, you don’t need foreign currency to shop overseas,” Kakonge said.

The promotion will run for a limited period, with winners announced via MTN’s official website and social media platforms. MTN MoMo also cautioned customers to be vigilant against fraud, stressing it does not request money before releasing prizes.

The mobile money operator currently serves more than 13.6 million customers in Uganda through a network of over 212,000 agents and 100,000 merchants.
