Three Injured in Sauna Explosion at Buziga Country Resort

At least three people sustained injuries and were rushed to different hospitals on Sunday evening following an explosion at a sauna facility at Buziga Country Resort in Kampala.

Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire said the explosion happened at around 8:30pm on Sunday at the facility located in Upper Buziga in Makindye Division .

“One of the victims, Hajjati Mastula,69 ,the vice chairperson for Katuuso village was the most affected and was found with severe burns on the chest and the back. Two other victims including Zahara Nakaweesi was burnt allover the body and broken leg while Mamrum Aisha had severe burns allover the body. They were rushed to Kiruddu Hospital from where they were later transferred to Nsambya and Mulago Hospitals respectively,” Owoyesigyire said.

According to police, preliminary investigations indicate there was excessive damage with part of the structure housing the sauna collapsing while the remaining walls developed cracked and the entire premises were scattered with debris of scattered broken glasses.

“Preliminary findings show it was huge explosion but the exact cause is not yet known. The scene and the surrounding areas have been cordoned off,” Owoyesigyire said.

He noted that as investigations into negligence continue, police will seek assistance from the National Building Review Board on how the sauna was built, how the temperatures were regulated and everything regarding it.

In the past, there have been similar cases of sauna explosions in various parts of the city that have left scores injured.
