Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, has said the July, 17 primaries marred by violence and disputes showed competitiveness within the party.
Speaking during NBS Barometer on Tuesday, Nabbanja addressed the unrest, emphasizing the need for respect, discipline, and adherence to democratic processes during elections.
Nabbanja described the NRM party as an one that thrives on competitiveness, which, while a positive sign of political engagement, can sometimes lead to heated tensions
"In the NRM, people are highly competitive, and the party welcomes everyone," she said.
While she acknowledged the intense competition that the NRM primaries stir, Nabbanja also cautioned that when this competitiveness goes too far, it can lead to serious consequences.
The primaries saw a disturbing surge in violence. In Kamuli, a tragic incident unfolded when Sowedi Egumbye, the husband of Sarah Irene Auma, the NRM’s LC5 chairperson flag-bearer, was killed during a violent clash between campaign supporters and the police.
The altercation began after Egumbye allegedly led a group of campaigners to raid the home of Buzaaya MP Martin Mugabi Muzaale, triggering a deadly confrontation.
This incident served as a stark reminder of how unchecked political rivalry can quickly escalate into violence.
In Kakumiro, another alarming episode took place when discrepancies in vote tallying were uncovered.
Nabbanja reported to have secured 211 votes, but later discovered that only 95 votes were counted at the tally center.
She led to the arrest of those suspected of vote tampering.
Referring to this as a cautionary example, she emphasised the importance of transparency and accountability in the electoral process.
Nabbanja stressed that while political rivalry is a natural part of democracy, it must be approached with maturity, discipline, and respect for the process.
"If we respected ourselves, some things wouldn’t be happening," she stated.
“We need the discipline to understand that in an election, you either win or lose. We are all responsible, exemplary citizens of this country.”
