The Parliamentary committee on Commissions, State Authorities and State Enterprises (Cosase) has summoned the Governor Bank of Uganda Emmanuel Mutebile, his Deputy Luis Kasekende together with the board of the central bank over the alleged irregularities in the closure of commercial banks.
The Committee chairperson Abdu Katuntu and his deputy Anita Among told journalists at parliament that their interface with the Bank of Uganda officials will only be limited to the queries raised in the Auditor General’s report.
"Yes, we have summoned them. There are some queries raised by the Auditor General that they need to answer," Among said.
The MPs reached the decision during a closed door meeting aimed at drafting a master plan for the long awaited interface with officials of Bank of Uganda.
According to the leaders of the committee the focus of the meeting will only be limited to the queries raised in the Auditor General’s report on the closure of defunct commercial banks
The report found out that BoU could have irregularly sold off Crane Bank, Teefe Bank, International Credit Bank Ltd, Greenland Bank, The Co-operative Bank, National Bank of Commerce and Global Trust Bank.
The 94-page report indicates that BoU did not follow any guidelines/regulations or policies in the sale of Crane Bank to dfcu Bank last year and in the closure of the other banks.
The Committee members also indicated on how the other stakeholders in the sale and buying of these commercial banks will be summoned after interfacing with Bank of Uganda officials.
