In a significant boost to her campaign, NRM delegates from the 12 districts of Busoga have unanimously endorsed Speaker of Parliament Anita Among for the position of 2nd National Vice Chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM).
The endorsement followed a meeting at Among’s home in Buyende District, where delegates from across the sub-region converged to show their support ahead of the party’s national delegates conference.
Busoga MPs, including Moses Magogo, Solomon Silwany, Maurice Kibalya, and Sanon Bwire, argued it was time for a leadership change, suggesting that Rebecca Kadaga’s decades in top positions — including 20 years as Speaker and a long tenure in the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) — should come to an end.
“Busoga is not individually owned,” MP Kibalya said, stressing the need for new representation.
Budiope East MP Moses Magogo told delegates, “Speaker Anita Among is now part of Busoga that should be trusted by all the delegates.”
He urged the region to rally behind her at the upcoming conference at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
Delegates also defended Among against foreign sanctions, insisting they stemmed from Parliament’s passing of the anti-homosexuality law, not corruption allegations, as claimed by her opponent’s camp.
The meeting, however, saw moments of tension when a delegate from Jinja — known to support Kadaga — narrowly escaped a confrontation with Among’s supporters, with police stepping in to avert violence.
Despite the flare-up, Busoga’s delegates remain firm in their support. With the August 27 vote approaching, their unified backing could prove pivotal in securing Among’s place in the NRM’s top leadership.
