Five soldiers have been injured in a shooting at Fort Stewart, a US Army base in Georgia, after a gunman opened fire within the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area earlier today.
Officials say the shooting began at 10:56am (6.56pm local time), prompting an immediate lockdown of parts of the installation. Emergency alerts instructed those on base to stay indoors and lock their windows and doors.
The suspect was apprehended at 11:35am, and authorities confirmed there is no longer an active threat to the community.
The soldiers were treated at the scene before being transported to hospital. Their conditions have not yet been released.
In a statement, Fort Stewart officials said the incident is under investigation, and more details will be shared in due course.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp posted on X, formerly Twitter, expressing his sorrow over the shooting.
“As we remain in close contact with law enforcement on the ground, Marty, the girls, and I are saddened by today’s tragedy at Ft. Stewart,” Kemp wrote.
“We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same.”
