The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Among, has urged school proprietors and administrators to urgently prioritize and enhance safety measures for learners following the tragic drowning of a pupil in a Mukono school.
Addressing Parliament, Among expressed deep concern over the incident, which occurred in a school swimming pool, and called on school operators to take full responsibility for the safety of children entrusted to their care.
“There was an accident in one of the schools in Mukono where a child drowned in a swimming pool,” she said. “I call upon the operators of schools to strengthen and ensure the safety of learners in their schools. They must take care of people’s children.”
Among warned that failure to improve safety protocols could lead to a loss of public confidence in educational institutions. “If you don’t do that, there will be uncertainty about what happens. People will lose confidence in these schools. They will not be sure if their children are safe,” she said.
She emphasized the urgent need to prioritize safety in all public spaces, particularly those involving children, to prevent further tragedies.
