Over 300 children and youth of Indian origin in Uganda took part in a patriotic essay and drawing competition held yesterday to commemorate Operation Sindoor, an event annually observed by Indian nationals in remembrance of the tragic attack in Pahalgam that claimed numerous lives.
The competition, organised by Adhwaita Gita Mandali in collaboration with TTD Temple, brought together participants aged 7 to 20 years, with the aim of fostering patriotism and cultural memory among the younger generation.
This year’s event received corporate backing from Picfare Group, whose sponsorship covered stationery, certificates for all participants, and cash prizes for the winners. Additional support came from Adi Narayana Balcha (IQ Stores) and other well-wishers who donated toys, wheelchairs, and clothes for distribution to the needy.
“As Picfare, we are open and willing to continue supporting such initiatives that target kids and youth as part of our CSR commitment to both Uganda and the Indian community,” said Jimmy Mutesasira, Head of Marketing at Picfare Group.
Mrs. Lavanya Shekar, head of Adhwaita Gita Mandali, praised the sponsors for their support, noting that previous events had largely relied on personal contributions from group members.
“We are grateful that this year, corporate sponsors joined us to make a bigger impact,” she said.
The winners of the competition will be officially awarded next week at a ceremony to be held at the Indian High Commission, with the Indian High Commissioner expected to preside.
The commemoration of Operation Sindoor continues to be a deeply meaningful occasion for the Indian community, promoting remembrance, unity, and youth empowerment through creative expression.
